PLANTAGENET. John. 1199-1216. AR Penny (18mm, 1.53 g, 3h). Short cross type, class Vc. London mint; Adam, moneyer. Struck in the name of Henry II, 1207-circa 1210. Crowned head facing; scepter to left / Voided short cross; quatrefoils in angles. Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 195; SCBI 56 (Mass), 1687 (same obv. die); North 971; SCBC 1352. Toned, die break in crown. Good VF.

From the Richard A. Jourdan Collection of Medieval European Coins, purchased from Andy Singer, 1999.

The ‘Short-Cross coinage is so called because the reverse type is a short, voided cross, contrasting with the long voided cross, reaching the other edge of the coins, that was to replace it in 1247. Here there was to be an even more complete break with tradition, for the coinage continued to be struck with the name of Henricus during the reigns of Richard Coeur de Lion (1189-00) and John (1199-1216), so that there are so English coins bearing the names of either of these monarchs.’ Grierson, p.90.
