THRACE, Perinthus. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ Medallion (40mm, 32.82 g, 1h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front, gorgoneion on cuirass / Zeus enthroned left, holding patera and scepter; at feet, eagle standing facing, head right, with wings displayed; around, twelve constellations of the Zodiac. Schönert, Perinthos 859 (same dies); RPC VII.2 572; Varbanov 550. Yellow-brown surfaces, pitting and surface corrosion on obverse. Near VF. Extremely rare. |
