Maurice Tiberius. 582-602. AV Solidus (21mm, 4.38 g, 6h). Constantinople mint, 7th officina. Struck 583/4-602. Helmeted, draped, and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus cruciger / Angel standing facing, holding long staff surmounted by staurogram and globus cruciger; Z//CONOB. DOC 5 (but cf. 149 for Antioch mint attribution); MIBE 6; SB 478 (but cf. 524 same). Toned. In NGC encapsulation 6323731-014, graded MS, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 2/5, graffiti.

This series of Maurice solidi have been attributed by some to the Antioch mint on the basis of the broad bust style. However, this hypothesis is rather tenuous and the scholarship remains split on the issue. Sear acknowledged the continuing debate in his revision of SB in 1987 (see pages 126-7) but elected to retain the distinction. Most recently, however, Hahn and Metlich in MIBE (2009) continued to reject the reattribution first proposed by Bellinger in his 1966 article and subsequently incorporated in DOC I (1966). Given that MIBE is the most recent scholarship on the issue, we have elected to continue to use the Constantinople attribution; but in the interest of clarity, the alternative references for those that use the Antioch attribution have also been provided.
