Louis Philippe, the cousin of King Louis XVI, was an outspoken liberal voice in the ancien regime and early leader of the French Revolution. Louis’s democratic politics were out of step with those of his family, and indeed most of the French aristocracy, particularly his cousins, the king and his brother, Charles comte d’Artois, the future conservative monarch Charles X. In September 1792, he changed his name to Philippe Égalite, an epithet more in line with his political leanings, but this was not enough to save him from the Reign of Terror. On 6 November 1793, he was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal and executed by guillotine. Philippe Égalite’s son would survive the Revolution and be crowned King Louise-Philippe in 1830.
